i2CAT has a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and eXtended (XR) laboratory, recently installed in the Naples building (Vilanova i la Geltrú). This laboratory not only includes the appropriate equipment and infrastructure to carry out research and innovation in the areas mentioned, but also to prepare demonstrators and pilots, including potential developments by external agents and / or collaborators, as well as to contribute with reference resources that they allow the constitution of a (co-) VR / XR laboratory distributed and connected at national and international level. The laboratory is complemented by the availability of innovative scientific contributions in the field of XR software, services and applications, always in a continuous process of extension and improvement. Highlights include platforms to make VR experiences accessible, to increase TV services with VR content and multi-device environments, XR applications in the field of culture and, especially, multi-user volumetric holo-communications services, applicable to different sectors XR. Finally, the laboratory is an ideal framework for research, as well as validating and demonstrating solutions in the areas of Computer Vision, Cloud Computing, next-generation networks and Artificial Intelligence (AI), focused on XR solutions. I2cat's VR Lab stands out not only for the availability of state-of-the-art, complete and varied equipment and infrastructure in the VR / AR / XR areas, but also for the availability of connectivity infrastructure using state-of-the-art technologies, including communications 5G. These resources also become a framework for research and innovation to apply new solutions in the fields of Computer Vision, Cloud Computing and AI, applied in XR services and applications. However, the differential resource of this lab is the availability of experts in each of the areas mentioned, whether at the level of research, engineering and / or innovation management, who have participated and led the development of platforms, innovative and disruptive services and applications, as well as national and international projects in these areas. In addition, it should be emphasized that this is not a closed and isolated VR Lab, but stands out for its connectivity with other remote locations (i2cat offices, Hospital de Sant Pau, University of Valencia, and research centers in the Netherlands and Greece). This facilitates its use in a multitude of different initiatives, including the demonstration and validation of distributed services and applications.

Equipment

The VR Lab includes state-of-the-art equipment in the field of AR, VR and XR. This equipment can be divided into different categories:

XR Content Capture Hardware
  • 1 6K Stereoscopic 180º VR Camera (ZCAM Pro)
  • 1 360º 8K VR Camera (KandaoVR QooCam Enterprise)
  • 1 360º 4K VR Camera (Samsung)
  • 8 Kinect v2 cameras (color + depth)
  • 8 Azure Kinect Cameras (color + depth)
  • 10 Intel RealSense Cameras (color + depth)

All cameras include their tripods

Processing Hardware
  • 2 cloud and graphics processing servers in the cloud
  • 1 content server
XR Content Consumption Hardware
  • 5 VR ready laptops
  • 5 desktop computers
  • 4 mobile devices (Samsung Galaxy S6, S7, S8, S9)
  • 2 Samsung tablets
  • 1 HTC VIVE
  • 1 Oculus Go
  • 2 Oculus Rift
  • 3 Oculus Quest 2
  • 2 Magic Leap (AR helmets)

All this equipment is complemented by end-to-end platforms and leading prototypes in the XR field, such as editing tools, signaling servers, adaptive content management and distribution, and web and native players.

In addition, there is a state-of-the-art telematics network, with a 1Gbps link that connects to i2cat offices. Finally, the VR Lab will become the headquarters of the Penedès 5G Area, being connected to other headquarters that will form the backbone of the territory with 5G technology. This VR Lab-linked connectivity infrastructure will provide an ideal framework for providing distributed services and testing and validation by SMEs and external agents.

Additional rooms are available on request: open rooms, work rooms (co-working and co-creation), training rooms and auditorium, TV set, terrace, etc. More information about these spaces can be found at:  https://www.neapolis.cat/espais/
