Biolab

GINYS-ICN2-007
The ICN2 Biolab is a transversal facility that offers scientific advice and practical training in the field of Cell Biology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology, as well as technical support to carry out basic and applied research activities in organisms. living (cells / cell lines, microorganisms). ), potentially infectious material (blood, tissues, body fluids, clinical samples) and other biological material (proteins, nucleic acids, microbial toxins). Its central goal is to facilitate the research of the interface of nanotechnology and life sciences in a successful and safe manner. ICN2 Biolab is a level 2 biosafety laboratory (BSL-2). The specific support offered by the Biolab Facility includes:
  • Access to BSL-2 laboratory and instrumentation.
  • Assistance, technical supervision and training of users to ensure the correct and safe use of available equipment.
  • Scientific and technical management, consultation and support in experimental design, implementation and analysis.
  • Technical and basic instruction (practical training) in experimentation with cell and tissue cultures, and in techniques of molecular biology and microbiology.
  • Carrying out experimental procedures by the technical staff of the installation.
  • Development of protocols, guidelines, operating procedures, reports and management of required mandatory documentation.
  • Assistance in administrative tasks related to legal aspects of biosafety and biosecurity.
  • General maintenance of the laboratory, including cleaning procedures, waste disposal, sterilization and disinfection and supply of supplies (disposable laboratory equipment, consumables and sterile solutions, etc.)
The Biolab installation aims to be flexible and open to (temporary) changes in the short or long term. All researchers can discuss possible adaptations of the Biolab with the facility leader who will try to address special needs and arrangements.

Equipment

The Biolab is a designated Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory of 36 m2, distributed between the laboratory and a decontamination transfer chamber (Safety Access System, SAS). Access to the Biolab is separated from the free-movement corridor by the SAS room where staff must leave street clothes and personal belongings and put on available clothing and protective equipment (PPE). The transfer chamber has an interlocking security system that prevents the simultaneous opening of the interior and exterior doors, and access is restricted to personnel authorized by fingerprint.

The installation has been designed in accordance with the UNE-EN 12128 standard with suitable materials and construction that guarantee adequate containment and robustness. The ventilation system is designed to generate negative pressure in both the working laboratory and the SAS and consists of a 50W fan that drives air through H5 and M14 type filters. The extraction system consists of a 450W fan with an EC motor and a HEPA filter type H14. The laboratory is equipped with an O2 detector (measuring range 0% – 5% Vol) and a CO2 detector (measuring range 0% – 25% Vol), both mounted on the surface, including a control unit with alarm.

The Biolab facility has two disinfection systems for regular and emergency decontamination of the laboratory: one based on UV lamps equipped with germicidal emitter, and another decontamination system with hydrogen peroxide (HPV).

The laboratory has two different areas each with its own equipment, one dedicated to working with microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi) and one dedicated to the work of cell culture. It is located in the 2091 and 2093 laboratory spaces on the second floor of the main ICN2 building.

EQUIPAMENT

The entire Biolab facility equipment can be used for self-service after a brief introduction by the facility leader. In order to minimize the risk of cross-contamination between the different areas within the Biolab, each space has its own equipment. Only a few facilities are shared between users of both spaces.
